Alfalfa is also called "lucerne" in most other parts of the world.
It is a perennial flowering plant that has been cultivated as an important forage in many countries. It has been used as livestock fodder since at least the era of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
Alfalfa is very popular among tortoises. It is highly digestible and high in protein, energy, vitamins and minerals but should be fed in moderation due to its protein content that will range between 15-20%.

Please note that some of these herbs like dandelions, red clover and nettles contain a larger amount of calcium compared to other herbs or flowers. In their fresh state some of these herbs may be diuretic but if you have an animal with bladder stones or issues with bladder sludge we suggest to consult your vet before offering these as treats.
